A family in Marathon, New York, made a startling discovery when they undertook a remodeling project in their two-story home. Upon gutting their upstairs bathroom and removing the ceiling they noticed that the attic, and attic crawl space, was almost completely grown over with black mold.
The cause of the mold infestation was improper ventilation. After correcting the ventilation issue, the homeowner called Stanley Steemer to perform the mold remediation using Cold Jet dry ice blasting.
Dry ice blasting differs from common methods of remediating mold because it does not damage any material it is being used on. This means it can be used over electrical wiring or plumbing without fear of causing damage, as can be the case with sand blasting. Because of its effectiveness, it reduces cleaning times up to 80%, as it completes the mold removal with only one pass of the machine. Conventional sanding or sand blasting requires numerous passes to work off the mold, while the Cold Jet uses “mini explosions” to immediately remove mold spores it contacts.
In the attic, after containment was setup to cover the unaffected insulation, the dry ice blasting began. The remediation in the entire attic and attic crawl space was completed in one and a half days. The contrast between the remediated and non-remediated areas as the work was being performed was profound. The wood was transformed from dark black to looking brand new with one pass with the dry ice blaster.
See below for time elapsed photos of less than one minute of dry ice blasting. The speed and efficiency are displayed in the series of photos.
