An older home in Illion, New York, suffered severe fire and smoke damage from an electrical fire in October. The day before the fire, circuit breakers had tripped several times, warning of a problem.
The fire began in the living room on the first floor causing significant damage to that room and up to the master bedroom above it. The rest of the home suffered severe smoke damage and heat exposure. One resident was home and upstairs at the time of the fire, and was alerted to exit by smoke detectors on the first floor. He escaped unharmed and alerted the fire department immediately, saving complete destruction of the home.
The homeowner then contacted his insurance agent who put them in touch with Stanley Steemer to begin mitigating damages and restore the home and contents. Within two hours, Stanley Steemer was at the home to meet with the homeowners and review the mitigation process.
The first step was to remove all soft goods from the home, including clothing and draperies, to be cleaned. The next step involved providing immediate cleaning for contents the homeowners needed the same day. Since they were renting a home right next door to their home, the technicians cleaned bed frames and select furniture and moved it into the rental house. The insurance adjuster then provided the homeowner with an advance check to pay for new mattresses, bedding and other incidentals they needed during the recovery process.
The Packout
The next step was to inventory and packout all restorable contents throughout the entire home and attic. Using a photo inventory service, Stanley Steemer individually logged and photographed every item that was being packed and taken to our contents processing facility for cleaning. Copies of the inventory were provided to the adjuster and customer.
Following the packout, all non-restorable contents were inventoried and disposed of in a dumpster. Lastly, the living room and portions of the upstairs bedroom were gutted and the home was thoroughly cleaned and all smoke odors were removed.
