A
small dryer fire forced the Remsen High School to close
Thursday, November 1, after it damaged one room and caused
smoke damage throughout one wing of the school. The fire
occurred in a dryer in the home economics room after school
let out on Halloween. A maintenance worker discovered the
fire and it was extinguished before it spread. No one was
hurt in the fire.
The next day
the school was closed and Stanley Steemer was called in
to clean the smoke damage and odor in an effort to reopen
the school the next day. Heavy smoke damage was limited
to the classroom where the fire had occurred, however, two
hallways comprising one wing of the school had smoke damage
throughout. Since the classroom doors were closed, no additional
rooms sustained contamination.
With a four man
crew performing a dry wipe down followed by a wet wall wash,
the smoke damage was cleaned off of the walls and floors.
The wing of the school was also thermal fogged and an ozone
treatment was administered to the damaged classroom. The
drop ceiling tiles throughout the hallways required sealing
and repainting to complete the job. After one day of work,
the school was ready and open for business the following
day. |
