A historic 4,000-square-foot home suffered extreme water damages during the late winter as a result of three splits in the hot water heat supply lines. One pipe broke in a third-floor bedroom and two pipes broke on the second floor, flooding water throughout the entire home down into the basement as well as the enclosed patio.
The homeowner was selling the home and in the process of closing a deal. Most of the contents were moved out at the time the pipes broke and the water flowed for at least three days, affecting nearly all of the home. Stanley Steemer was selected to mitigate the damages as one of State Farm’s Premiere Service Contractors, and the agent, Chris Otis, was kept updated throughout the mitigation.
The first step in taking on such a massive water damage is to remove all of the saturated carpet. Since the carpets had been wet for many days, delamination had begun to occur. In addition to removing wet carpeting, it also takes out a significant amount of moisture removing the soaking wet carpet pad underneath.
The interior walls and ceilings contained insulation which was wet, requiring the removal of many ceilings and walls throughout the home. To dry the home, Stanley Steemer installed a trailer-mounted high-volume desiccant dehumidifier which pumps in dessert-like dry air at up to 2,000 CFM. This removed the moisture from the structure in four days.
After all of the demolition and drying, the home was cleaned up and ready for reconstruction in just over a week.
