Posh Skaneateles Summer Lake Home Suffers Severe Water Damage from Broken Pipes

A beautiful summer lake home on the shores of Skaneateles Lake suffered severe water damage after several pipes froze and broke as a result of the freezing temperatures the area experienced in late January.

Pipes broke on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the posh home, gushing water for an undetermined amount of time. Complicating the claim was the fact that almost the entire home consisted of tongue and groove knotty pine ceilings and walls, in addition to solid oak floors throughout.

The homeowner’s agent
recommended Stanley Steemer to mitigate the damages and dry the structure. Stanley Steemer’s technicians arrived at the home less than two hours after receiving the emergency call.

When the damage was discovered, the owners of the home were in Florida and reported the claim to their insurance agent. The agent recommended they contact Stanley Steemer to mitigate the damages and dry the entire structure. Stanley Steemer’s technicians arrived at the home less than two hours after receiving the emergency call. They met the owner’s contractor to determine the extent of damages and set up the most efficient way to dry the property.

A high output 2,000-cfm desiccant dehumidifier was installed beside the home to dry the structure and contents, and a Dragon portable furnace was installed to raise the interior temperature to speed the drying. The desiccant produces extremely dry air, with relative humidity readings near 1%, which rapidly pulls the moisture out of the building and contents. The moisture is then cycled outside the home.

The desiccant, in addition to the airmovers setup throughout the three-story home, was able to effectively dry the entire property in under a week. Because the property had been wet for over a week, mold had set in under some of the hardwood floors, which required them to be removed. Once the home was dry, the insured’s contractor had a clean slate to begin the repairs.

Much of the wooden furniture throughout the home was also very wet and was taken off-site to Stanley Steemer’s headquarters. To dry the furniture and restore it to is pre-loss condition, it was setup in a contained room for drying and cleaning.
