Since the building was a historic structure, the
ceiling in the unit where the fire originated had a tin ceiling
underneath the drywall. This ceiling acted as a fire barrier,
preventing the fire from spreading to the other units and causing
a total loss.
Stanley Steemer was called by the property owner’s
insurance company to handle the emergency damage mitigation and
cleanup the evening after the fire. Crews arrived the following
morning to begin the very involved mitigation/cleaning process.
Saving
the library books from exposure damage was the first priority
as the water used to fight the blaze caused water damage to some
of the walls, ceilings and carpeting in the library. The books
in the affected area were boxed, water was extracted from the
carpeting and dehumidifiers and airmovers were installed.
Three 30-yard
rolloff dumpsters were delivered to the property to dispose of
all of the damaged contents and structural components throughout
the building. The unit where the fire originated was gutted down
to the studs in each room. All charred studs were then sanded
and/or removed depending on the severity of their damages. Lastly,
a sealant was then applied to all the previously charred surfaces.
The units
with smoke damage were wiped down from ceiling to floor with treated
sponges to remove all soot. They were then treated with wet thermal
foggers and ozone generators to destroy all odors left behind
from the fire. |
